- Date: 21 Dec 87 17:08:33 GMT
- Organization: MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, MA
-
- I would like to hear about any experiences people have creating
- documents using Word 3.01 on a Mac, writing them out as DCA formated
- files (a Word option), transfering those files to a PC, and then
- editing the documents using WordPerfect on an IBM PC or PC clone. In
- particular, I would like to know what features of a complex document
- survive such a transfer intact, which do not but can be fixed with a
- little work on the PC, and which are hopelessly garbled.
-
- Why? You can probably guess; I bet the story is quite familiar. Our
- group got a few Macs. Some of us started using them to prepare documents
- and the like, editing them ourselves. It was faster than hand-writing
- them or printing the Mac-produced files and then having a secretary type
- them into an archaic, Brand X, stand-alone word-processor (adding typo's
- along the way). Middle management noticed this situation and decided it
- was not cost-effective. They replaced the secretaries' archaic, Brand X,
- stand-alone word-processors. But not with Macs. They replaced them with
- PC clones running WordPerfect. They also want to replace our Macs with
- PC clones so we can run WordPerfect for document creation and pass the
- files to the secretaries for further editing.
-
- We Mac users would rather not give up our Macs. One option is to buy
- copies of WordPerfect for the Mac when it is shaken-down. But middle
- management, having tolerated the archaic, Brand X, stand-alone,
- word-processors for many years now feels an urgent need to set things
- right IMMEDIATELY. An interim measure would appear to be using DCA as an
- intermediate format for moving document files back and forth. If that
- works tolerably well.

- I've noticed this bug. I print front-to-back. You could also try
- specifying the page numbers you want printed, including section numbers:
- in my case, from 1s1 to 56s3. That would print from section one, page

-
- The only way I could find to make it stop doing that was to reboot and

-
- Do y'all still find lots of bugs in word 3.01? I must run across a

- Any PowerPoint users out there.
-
- I have a moderately aggravating problem: anytime I try to print reduced
- versions of my slides (either as speaker's notes or as handouts)
- PowerPoint leaves out significant portions of the slide.
-
- If I'm printing speaker's notes, this problem extends to the note text

- I like the product, but it's causing me some minor grief since the

-
- Yes, I've noticed it. It's really annoying.
-
- But I've also found a workaround.
-
- In the Print dialog box, instead of letting it print "all" :-) the
- pages, explicitly set the range of pages to print. For this to work,
- you must include section numbers as well as page numbers. The first
- page of your document is thus usually "P1 S1". If you just say "1" this
- can be ambiguous. If you drag the scroll bar to the end of the document,
- the last page number of the document is displayed in the lower-left
- corner of the screen, and is generally almost readable.
-
- BTW: This bug is not particular to the table of contents. It appears
- any time you have multiple sections in a document. It appears to drop
- the first two sections (or all but the last?).
-
- Hope this helps.

- Nothing daunted, here I am to try again... :-)
-
- Alas, you can't. There are no permanent addresses in AppleTalk;
- addresses are assigned dynamically whenever the Mac comes on-line on the
- net. You use NBP (Name Binding Protocol) to assign an arbitrary (and
- presumably unique) name-and-type pair to a node-and-socket, and other
- folks wishing to talk to you can use the well-known name-and-type to
- learn the address.
-
- Addresses frequently remain "relatively constant": that is, the address
- the Mac chooses is likely not to change if your net is stable. This can
- create an illusion of permanence. There is a way to take advantage of
- it: use NBPLookup the first time to learn the address of the
- destination, then remember both the name and the address for future use.
- There is an NBP operation called NBPConfirm (IM II-301) which allows
- you to check that the address is still good, with greater efficiency
- than a look-up. If it's still good, fine; if not, do the look-up again.
-
- I hope a flame war doesn't start over networking strategies :-). The
- dynamic nature of AppleTalk addresses is to allow the "plug-and-play"
- feature: no configuration needed, just plug that little cable in the
- back of your Mac and boot it, and you're on the net. The Mac does the
- rest.
-
- For more info, see "Inside AppleTalk". I don't know where you can get
- it (I got mine from my Area Associate) but you might try your local
- technical bookstore, or APDA.

- After playing around with the control panel, I noticed that my

- a (moderately complicated) layout procedure, which is opened in one
- instance by a call to AddRecord which takes about 4 seconds to execute
- on a Mac2. Is this usual/not uncommon /abnormal in people's experience?
- Does anyone know of any means of speeding it up? Is this related to 1?
-
- Thanks for any suggestions, Simon Evans.

- Subject: My 'disk catalog' overfloweth! Help!
- Date: 27 Dec 87 02:34:47 GMT
- Organization: Digital Equipment Corporation
-
- Well, here it is a day after Christmas, and having eaten my fill of
- turkey (too many times) and played with my new toys, I felt it was
- finally time to get to that odious task I've been putting off for so
- many months:
-
- Cataloging that box of diskettes...
-
- So, I faithfully cranked up Micro Disk Cataloger (MDC II, V2.1b). All
- went well until I got JUST to the end of the box, at which time the
- program indicated that 'it didn't have enough memory to read that
- disk'.
-
- Experimentation indicated that even running without Multifinder on a
- 2 Meg. Mac II, it was apparently limited by something internal to
- the program, not by the system memory (I think it was written in Forth).
- WHAT A PAIN!
-
- I checked my friendly MacUser to see if there might be a later
- version of the program, but it didn't show MDC II in its "current
- version" nor Quick Clicks sections.
-
- So, my questions:
-
- o Is it a current product? If so, what is its current version and
- who can I contact (I can't find a number for New Cannon Microcode)?
-
- o Alternately, have any of you had good experience with a disk
- cataloger? Which ones? Were they limited in the number of
- diskettes they could keep track of?
-
- o Does anyone have any 'heavy' experience with "Disk Rngr", which came
- across the net recently? What are its limitations?
-
- Thanks, and WATCH OUT!

-
- Does anyone know if Electronic Arts plans to have a Mac II compatible
- version of DMCS 2.0? The present version (with orginal copy protection
- or with the copy protection removed) bombs.
-
- Better yet, does anyone know of a program similar to DMCS 2.0 which
- works on a Mac II? Ideally this program should take advantage of the
- Apple Sound Chip (i.e., use sampled sounds for playback, support either
- 4-voice stereo, or probably what would be more useful is 8-voices in
- mono) , and have rudimentary MIDI options like DMCS 2.0 (i.e., MIDI
- playback, limited amount of note entry via MIDI). Its scoring features
- should be at least as strong as DMCS 2.0. Finally, it should be
- marketed for the home market instead of the professional music market to
- keep the cost reasonable. Oh, of course, it should run under
- multifinder.
-
- Is there a program like that? Or am I just dreaming...

- Subject: Re: The Installer question
- Date: 27 Dec 87 03:17:00 GMT
-
-
- I also used the installer scripts for the new system, despite
- the bad press I've heard about them. As far as I can tell, I
- didn't have any problems due to the installer scripts (I've
- been running on the new system for a few weeks, so I think
- it's likely that any problems would have turned up by now).
-
- There were a few things the installer scripts could have done
- better on, I think. It was helpful that they carried over all
- my fonts and DA's to the new system, but not so helpful that
- they added some of the standard Apple fonts that were not in
- my old system file. Since I have SUITCASE (TM), I had removed
- some Apple fonts from the system because I wanted them off in
- Suitcase files. By having those fonts re-added when the new
- system was installed, I got the versions in the system file
- instead of the ones in my Suitcase files. In some cases I
- had alternate versions in the Suitcase files, which meant that
- I got unexpected results until I realized what had happened.
-
- Similarly, I didn't want it to re-add any Apple DA's that I
- had removed from the System file.
-
- One DA that didn't transfer successfully for me was the
- SMART ALARMS (TM) DA. That has a special installer program
- (you can't install it with Font/Da Mover), so it probably
- mucks around with resources or other things of the system
- file. In my own opinion, that DA should be rewritten to
- work as an INIT file and a DA which could be handled by
- SUITCASE. I don't see that Apple should try to handle it.
-
- There is also some kinda neat utility that I had run against
- my older version of Finder, which created some special resource
- for it. I can't remember the name of that resource right now,
- but it allows you to customize the way that Finder lays out things
- on the desktop. As a for instance, I have this set up so that
- the "cleanup window" process (in the SPECIAL menu) will stagger
- the location of Icons in adjacent columns. This way means that
- I can have longer names on my files without the name under one
- Icon running into the name under the neighboring Icons. Kinda
- nice, but the installer script did not copy that resource over
- to the new version of Finder that it installed. Given that this
- is a resource that Finder recognizes, but which would *always*
- be setup by the user (as opposed to Apple), I think the installer
- should check for it and copy it if it's there.
- (assuming I have my facts straight on how it works, of course)
-
- Note that all three of the above problems would have happened
- if I had just dragged stuff into my system folder instead of
- using the installer scripts. I think that the installer could
- be improved to handle the first and the third situations better,
- but even as it is I feel I was better off using the installer
- scripts.
-
- I also wish it would have remembered all the preferences that
- I had setup from the control panel...

- I read an article on here not long ago that there is a microprocessor
- inside all ADB devices that are initialized upon a bootup. Thus,
- unplugging one will erase the memory in the device. Did you Shut Down
- when switching keyboards? If not, the new keyboard wasn't initialized.
- The person mentioned nothing about damage, though, just that the system
- had to be rebooted. Hope that helps.
